The Achievers of the Sigma Beta Scholars (SY 2007-2008)

Last March 27, 2008 we attended the Recognition Program of Laguindingan National High School where we have at present 16 scholars. Due to time constraints we were not able to attend the at Alubijid National Comprehensive High School sand Libertad National High School, cheduled 8:00 AM same day. However, we still visited the awardees at their school and give to them their incentives without the ceremony.

Sigma Beta History

The Sigma Beta Sorority is the oldest recognized sorority in the country, founded seventy five years ago by young women who desired to foster closer bond among the members as well as to be of service to the community.

Sigma Beta Sorority was founded in University of the Philippines, Diliman Campus on February 14, 1932. As the sisters left the confines of the academic world, Sigma Beta Alumni Associations were formed in different parts of the country.
As a group of women who desired to foster closer bond among the members as well as to be of service to the community, we the Sigma Betans of Cagayan de Oro City, spearheaded the scholarship program for high school students, with the full support of the Beta Sigma Fraternity worldwide and the selected High School Institutions of Mindanao.

This year, the Sigma Beta Scholarship Program is hoping to add another 30 scholars who will be incoming high school students in various public high schools of Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City, Philippines.

The Sigma Beta Scholarship Program

The Sigma Beta Alumni Association-Cagayan de Oro Chapter, Inc. is a non-profit, non-stock organization committed in serving the populace of Cagayan de Oro and the municipalities of Misamis Oriental.

This project started June 2006 with the initiative of some members of the Sigma Beta Alumni Association Cagayan de Oro Chapter, Inc. with 23 students from the three (3) schools, namely; Laguindingan National High School, Alubijid National Comprehensive High School and Cagayan de Oro City High School.

In many of our national high schools based on our random survey there are students who cannot enroll because they cannot afford the fees. These students, who have potential as good leaders may not be able to even finish high school due to poverty. With some financial assistance, we could make a difference in the lives of these young men and women and their families.

Mechanics:

Sigma Beta Scholarship Program, Inc. will look for donors who are willing to support a scholar in high school. Each award will be Php 4,000.00 per year broken down as follows:

Registration and other fees : Php 500.00

School Supplies : 500.00

Monthly allowance @300.00 : 3,000.00

Total for one school year per scholar : 4,000.00

Every grading period, each scholar who achieve the highest scholastic award will be given a cash prize of 1,000.00 pesos every year.

Screening will be done by the Sigma Beta CDOC, Inc. with the recommendation of the school adviser and/or guidance counselor.

Awards will be based on the following criteria:

Academic standing: 40% (Report Card)

Financial Need: 40% (Income Tax/Equivalent)

Character/Personality: 20% (Recommendation/Interview)

Awards will be given within the period of the academic school year and renewable every year with the same criteria for screening.
